The Book of Judges: A Quick Overview [Whiteboard Bible Study]
The book of Judges tells a story of the ancient Israelites' early relationship with their land, their deity, and the surrounding nations. Biblical figures like Samson and Gideon are found here, as well as allusions to the forthcoming King David. However, this story doesn't have a very happy ending.

Joshua: a Quick Overview | Whiteboard Bible Study
Переглядів 48 тис.2 роки тому
The book of Joshua kicks off the section of Old Testament history in the modern Christian Bible. It’s also the first book of the Former Prophets in the Tanakh, the Bible of Jesus’ time. The Old Testament is largely about how the people of Israel came to their land (and lost it), and Joshua begins Act One with the people of Israel entering the promised land of Canaan and then facing a choice: wi...
12 Non-trivial Facts about the Bible
Переглядів 56 тис.3 роки тому
The Bible is a fascinating collection of documents-most of which have been around for more than 2,000 years. In this video, we take a look at 12 important facts about the Bible. These aren't trivial things-these are facts that I wish I'd known before I got started studying the Bible. NOTE: Looking back, saying that the Bible is written from a "mostly Jewish perspective" is a bit reductive. If I...
What Is Oppression, and What Does the Bible Say About It?
Переглядів 24 тис.4 роки тому
Oppression is what happens when people grow their own sense of power, comfort, and security at the expense of others. It's the use of violence, coercion, and corruption that makes life easier for some and harder for others. And it's one of the main problems addressed in the Bible, from beginning to end. This video gives a high-level look at the problem of oppression in the Bible, and how the au...

Who Wrote the Bible? An Overview of Divine Inspiration and Human Authorship
Переглядів 48 тис.4 роки тому
If you've ever asked your pastor or Sunday school teacher, "Who wrote the Bible?" you probably got one of two responses: 1. "God wrote the Bible." The Holy Spirit moved prophets like Moses and apostles like Paul to write about God's relationship with the world (1 Ti 3:16; 2 Pe 1:20-21). 2. "About 40 people wrote the Bible." The individual books were written by many authors over many years in ma...
The Tower of Babel and the Other Gods of the Bible

The first eleven chapters of Genesis form the prologue for the rest of the Bible. In these chapters we find some of the Bible's most famous stories, like Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, and Noah's Ark. This prologue culminates with the united people of earth attempting to build a tower to heaven, only for God to confuse their efforts by distributing different languages across the population. We also take a look at three major themes in these books: wisdom, justice, and lament. If you'd like to see a still of the whiteboard a...

When modern folks talk about “prophets” and “prophecy,” they’re often referring to someone foretelling future events. However, in the Bible, the prophets played a much larger role. When the Bible mentions prophets, it’s usually referencing the following: 1. Individuals who spoke on God’s behalf 2. The books of prophecy in the Old Testament If we understand both of these uses of “prophet,” then ...

This God was so sacred and heavenly that anything crass, common, profane, or...

    Just finished reading the book of Judges and I have to say it's one of the most depressing books I've ever read in my life let alone Bible books. The sheer levels of brutality and wanton violence God seemingly allowed, tolerated and even blessed has just left me breathless and quite demoralised., you have people butchering and slaughtering each other en mass with an indifference and a casualness of shaking hands. It's hard to believe this is the same God that cares about every sparrow that falls. 😢 I feel like I never want to read that book again as long as I live can it possibly imagine how it can uplift Christians in any way shape or form. Literally everyone in that book is a complete barbaric savage including all of the Israelites and judges.

    Wait, you seriously think the Bible says there are other gods?? What about all the verses that say they're is only ONE God? Dude, learn context and it wouldn't hurt to learn Hebrew either. There is no actual Egyptian god or any other god. They aren't real. They are made up. Yahweh makes judgment on them in the sense that they are things like the Nile river and the sun, so Yahweh turns the water to blood and takes away the light of the sun. The princes of the other nations may be metaphorical or may be angels/demons, but not other gods. They aren't divine. Yahweh cuts off the hands and head of a STATUE that philistines incorrectly believed represented a true god. In psalms, that is also not talking about divine beings. "Divine counsel" is literally "congregation of God" meaning there are others present, but only one God. In fact, humans throughout the Bible are called gods, so it may be referring to judges and the reference to "dying like mortal men" can easily be understood as "dying just like all the other mortal men." Alternately, it could be angels to which he refers. Jesus even points out to the pharisees that the old testament calls humans "gods" so considering all the verses that clearly state there is only one God, it's completely incorrect and even heretical to say there are really other divine gods.

    I got great insight from this video. Please correct me if I'm wrong. "Jesus risen from the dead" is the core fact/believe that breaks the bible's circular reasoning?. I also have a legit question that I have issues wrapping my head around. He said Jesus followers being murder is a "good indication" they were telling the truth? Please help me understand that premise. Thanks.

    • @OverviewBible
      @OverviewBible Місяць тому

      I'm glad this is helpful! To clarify, I do believe that a lot of people's reasoning when it comes to what they believe about the Bible is indeed circular. However, Christianity as a faith tradition predates the Bible, so it wasn't always this way. Earlier on, people shared a message with other people, and the recipients deemed the messengers trustworthy (for a variety of reasons). Re: martyrdom, it's more of a "good indication" that they *thought* they were telling the truth than actual evidence of a resurrection. The idea that several adults would dedicate and sacrifice their lives (without any real material gain) for something they knew was a lie is a little too ridiculous for many to accept. ;-)

    . The Bible has to be read slowly to be understood and analyzed intelligently. For example, Leviticus starts with animal sacrifices… Your intelligence should tell you this is a very primitive tradition. All this blood spread around the altar to atone for sins, the priest eating some meat in holy places… Do this today to atone for your sins, and you will be laughed at….

    • @OverviewBible
      @OverviewBible Місяць тому

      That deserves a video unto itself, but I can give you a brief explanation here. The Apocrypha (or, more respectfully, "Deuterocanon") usually references documents that were considered sacred in Judaism and Christianity, but were not included in the Masoretic Text (the authoritative Jewish canon established by the 900s C.E.). When the Protestant Reformation began 600 years later, Martin Luther moved these non-canonical (according to Judaism) books to the end of the Old Testament, and eventually the books were phased out of printed Protestant Bibles.
